give up all the land except a field and a house but they would not agree, so they were evicted. They then built a wooden hut at Parnell's Cross without any chimney and they lived there for the rest of their lives.
As well as the heavy rent people had to pay tithes and these were collected by tithe proctors. These men did not live in the locality and I do not know where thwey lived or who they were because my father says it is 70 years since they went around. After some time Catholics refused to pay them and because of that a battle was fought in Newtownbarry and they had not to pay them any longer. A man named Ned Atkinson who is buried in this churchyard fought in this battle and he had a muzzle loaded gun. It was said that as he was loading his gun the reports from other guns made him think that his gun was going off so he continued to load it till it was full.
