- The old people say it is not right to burn a log of the elder tree and if it is brought in among other logs they cast it aside and refuse to place it on the fire. This is due to an old story connected with this tree.
It is said, that in the Penal times a priest was sentenced to be hanged and early one morning the soldiers took him out and hanged him on an elder tree. Since then it has been considered a sign of bad luck on an house in which the elder tree is used for fire-wood.
