After some time a boy at the end of the table let fall a card, and as he stooped to pick it up he saw the devil's foot under the table. He nearly fainted and at this the stranger got up and went out. The boy told the others what he had seen and they decided not to play cards in that old house again as it was the Devil who had taken part in their game that night.
