- In olden times there was some candle-making done in the homes in order not to buy them in the shops. There was a man in Galbally by the name of Thomas Shannon and he used to make candles. Candles used to be made from grease. The thread was woven by a spinning-wheel.
Peggie O' Brien.Years ago people made starch out of potatoes. Old people used to make flummery out of oaten meal and used to make candles out of tallow.
Soap is made of tallow and tallow is got from sheep. They made baskets out of sally switches and they made jumpers and coats out of wool.
John J. O'RourkeThe old people long ago made their own candles from the fat of cattle. It was called tallow. When they wanted soap they got fat and let it dry out hard and made soap from it. They made their own thread they got the wool of the sheep and wove it with a spinning wheel and made the thread with a spindle and dyed the wool different colours.- Collector
