- In olden times basket-making was a great industry in Ireland.
They were made of sallies which were first cut and dried. They were then peeled and cut in various lengths and plaited to suit the various types of baskets.
There were various types, such as, market-baskets, school-baskets, butter-baskets and the old-fashioned sgiathac.
The market- baskets were about one foot square with two long handles in it to hang on the arm. The school-baskets were of a smaller size with one handle in the middle. The(continues on next page)- Collector
