    every night. Each person brought two sods of turf and a penny every Monday morning. He used to teach writing, reading and sums. They were not allowed to teach Irish in the schools. The read-of-my-daisy and spelling book was used in the first classes. Writing was done on a slate with a gutter pencil, on, Each ones name was writing on his slate. The teachers remained about two years in each place. The pupils used to write on their knees. The first National school was started in Durrow 1880. The floors were made of cut stones. The punishment the children got was to kneel on the cut stones.
