    Moneygall is situated in the parish of Dunkerrin and in the barony of Clonlisk.

    Tradition states that there is an underground passage from the old church at Castletown to the Moat a few hundred yards away.
    This was probably used as a way of escape by the Monks in the days of persecution.
    The Ancient families of the district were the MacEgans, the MCormacks after whom Ballycormac is named also the OCarrolls and the OMeaghers.
    The O'Carrolls ruled over Southern Offaly the built Dunkerrin Castle and now in possesion of a family called Rolleston.
    The also owned Emill Castle no in possession of Major Stonet
