- EglishEglish Parish is situated partly in the Barony of Lower Ormond Co Tipperary but chiefly in that of Eglish or Fircall.Fircall = was the ancient territory of the O'Molloys the chiefs of this district.Fear an Ceall? = The men of the Churches or tribe of the Churches, possibly to express this general impresses that Churches were unusually numerous in this district.Fircall was part of the ancient Kingdom of Meath and comprised the modern Baronies of Eglish and Ballyboy with part of Ballycowen in Kings Co.A portion of ancient Fircall came close to the town of Birr in the East side in the same way as does the Barony of Eglish at present. The parish of Eglish extends right into Birr.The Castles, forts and strongholds were also very numerous in Fircall and it was particularly noted for it's extensive forest known as the "great wood of Fearcall", which covered the Eastern portion and of which traces yet remain.O'Molloy, the ruler of this territory, was sometimes called King, at other times prince, and frequently by the English, chief of his sept. His family were of the race of the Southern Hy Niall, or Clan Colman, the ancient Kings of Meath, and a prince of Firceall, were very powerful.(continues on next page)
