Mass was often said in the old graveyard of Kiltennel an out-of-the way place about two miles from Borris. Here William Byrne, the then Archbishop of Dublin, often said Mass when he was "On the Run" from the priest-hunters. For several years a priest, disguised as a lay man, lived in Ballyroughan, in what is now known as Burgess's farm house.
The people of the district faithfully guarded his secret and regularly attended his Mass in his own house.
Occasionally, when there was no danger from spies or soldiers, he would visit Tinnecarrig and there in St Cullen's church offer up the Holy Sacrifice.- Collector
