- Long ago boys made homemade toys. They made tops. First they got the wood from a crab tree or some hard wood like that. They then made it round and sharpened one end. They went to a blacksmith's forge and got him to put the spinner in it. All the boys would make one. They also made a little top from a thread spool. They sharpened one end. A stick was then got and fitted into the hole of the spool. They spun this with their fingers. This top was called a teetotum.They made whistles from sycamore or sally branches, or some wood which would peel easy. They loosened the skin on the stick. They then cut a little notch in it.
