This was a profitable industry at Ballygahan copper mines up to about forty or fifty years ago.The water emenating from the mine was impregnated with copper, and by causing this water to flow slowly through wooden launders over scrap metal, some chemical action took place. The metal disappeared and almost pure copper was precipitated instead.- Collector
