- This belief has come down the generations. The great hunger is called the Féir Gortach and the name is used to name the complaint just as the name of any other illness would be - thus "the "Feír Gortach" struck him on his way home.
It is described as a wonderful hunger or feeling of being hungry.
There is no cure except some oat-meal.
It was the custom in olden times for people always to carry a piece of oat-bread in the pocket.
Long stories are told about victims of the mysterious disease and Long descriptions of how they felt and of the immediate cure on eating the smallest morsel of oat meal.- Informant
