- Buying and SellingIn older times shops were not as common as they are to day. People usually had to go to the nearest town for their messages. Goods were sold in the country shops. Goods were often given for work, and is still done. People say they get goods on tick when they do not pay for them for a few days after they purchase. If one customer bought something, and sold it again to another for more money, the gain is called "Boot". Change is the money given back after paying for an article. Second hand clothes are called cant clothes. The markets were held in towns. Small shops are called hucksters. A dealer is man who buys and sells again for profit. Pedlars are people who go about selling various articles. There are still some feather and rag buyers. A sixpence(continues on next page)
