There was an Iron Foundry in Swanlinbar in olden times. The irish name of the village is An Murleann Iarann. The ore came from Altcrock a downland on the slope of a mountain in the district called Sliabh an Iarann. There are several mentions of Iron in names of places around. One of the falls in the Claddagh River is called Lasa Iarann. There are several springs around in which there are traces of iron-ore on the water. Near Swanlinbar there are spring-wells in which there is traces of Sulphur and Magnesia and Iron. The water is considered a great remedy for Rheumatism.
