    May Day. Neither milk, salt nor coals are given out of the house that day.
    Nothing is lent and some people would not put out the ashes that day. If a stranger goes into a house to light his pipe he must stay in the house until he has smoked it.
    John's Eve. Material for a bon-fire is gathered. If possible new turf is provided. The boys try to leap across it. The ashes of the fire are put into corners of fields to bring luck on the crops.
    Cows are driven through the ashes and if there is a sick cow some are rubbed to her hoofs.
    Christmas Eve. Boxty is made for the supper which is the big meal of the day. Absent members of the family try to get home in time for it. The kitchen is tidied and the door left unbolted before the family go to bed.
    Christmas Day. The Christmas candles are lighted early and put in the window. A roast goose is provided for dinner. Local dances are held that night.
    Stephen's Day. Boys dress up in straw
