- Famine times
In my father's district which the famine affected very much he said that he heard his father "my grand-father" say that there was a famine Hospital in Killeshandr and another in Cavan, and that he saw crowds going from one to the other.
The year before that there was an abundance of potatoes, when the farmers wanted the potatoe ground for other crops they dumped them into the ditch. They thought so little of them, that they made a song about them which run as follows: -
"God look down without a frown
Upon us poor creatures
And sent us meat that we can eat,
And take away the praties."
This part of the country been very thickly populated at that time but people died in great numbers and many left their lands and went to America.
