- Our house is thatched. The ribs are oak and the rafters are also made of oak. It is scrawed on top of the ribs.
The first coat of thatch was sewed on to the ribs with hay ropes made by hand, after the first coat of thatch was put on with scollops and wheaten straw. The scollops are thin pointed rods driven through the straw to keep it together .
The best scollops are hazel or sally, because they are the toughest and easiest to twist.
The scraws are put on top of the ribs to keep the house warm.
