This bread iron was used in olden days, when the people existed chiefly on potatoes, oaten bread, and sweet milk. It was manufacted by the blacksmith, and was used for baking oaten bread. The oaten cake (is) was made from oatmeal mixed with water. It was broad and flat, and about half an inch thick. It rested against the bread iron, and was baked in front of the fire.
