    defended his people against arrest by the police and military for non. payment of tithes. It is told of him that on one occasion he set out with the military and went from house to house and told his people not to pay unless they got receipts. But the military had not receopts, and they had their labour in vain.
    The present church is dedicated to St. Matthew, the patron saint of the parish, and there are few families without a Matthew.
