- To prevent a mare from foaling before time.
The following remedy is still employed in rural areas in County Cavan. It has been tried within the last three years in the parishes of Crosserlough and Denn but with what success I cannot say. I have heard intelligent men say that they have undoubtedly seen the cure affected.
Method: The man who has the cure is brought to the mare in all haste. After an examination of the animal he prepares any piece of stick from one to two feet in length and drives it into the manger-wall above the mare's head. Then he pulls a few hairs (three I understand) from her (the mares) 'bab' and proceeds to twist them round the stick (there is a certain no. of times which I cannot ascertain) and while doing so he recites in a muffled voice, a certain prayer (or charm) which he finishes in the name of the Blessed Trinity. I haven't been able to get this prayer. Those who have it are loathe to give any information about it. And now what about the stick(continues on next page)- Informant
