- The famine brought a great change to the district. The people fled to america in hundreds from this district to escape the poverty and starvation that faced them at home. Many of these poor people did not survive the hardships of the long voyage.
There are many sites of houses that were occupied at one time that are in ruins now. 'Gorman's' old house in Behey. 'McGuire's' old house in Behey. 'Frazer's' old house in Drumhirk. 'Farrelly's' old house and 'Carr's' old house. Those two houses were in Drumhirk. 'Pat Flood's', 'Owen Reilly's' and 'Boylan's' old houses were in Knockanork.
The 'blight' came on the potatoes in a bad year and the potatoes failed in the ground. There were potatoes distributed named the 'Red German's' and 'Champions'-a hundred of each, and they were set in 'lands' or wide ridges.
