On his advice the Holy Father divided the extensive diocese into three parts, over which Ra. Revd. Dr. Clune C.S.S.R. ruled as Archbishop.
Dr Gibney gained considerable fame for his courageous conduct on more than one occasion. In 1880 he was present at the hunting down of the Kelly Bushranging gang, and attended Ned Kelly after his capture, when he was thought to be dying. Later the same day when other members of the gang were making their final stand in the burning hotel at Glenrowan, Victoria, Fr Gibney insisted on entering the burning building into which the police were pouring volley after volley of shots and found Dan Kelly and his comrade, Steve Harte, lying dead with no signs of wounds on either. Later, when Ned Kelly was sentenced to death he prepared him for the end and accompanied him to the scaffold.
This famous prelate died in 1927 aged 88 years.
