- Marriages take place locally at all times of the year. The month of May is thought unlucky for marriage because the old saying is, " Marry in May and you'll rue the day" . Matches are made in my district. Money is given as dowry. Stocks or goods are not given. A wedding feast is held at the brides house on the wedding day. Strawboys visit the house in the evening. They are dressed in straw. They wear straw hats on their heads and have sacks on for a dress. They are usually well received. They dance and sing and play music and then they get money. Two or more of them go to town and buy porter. They bring it back and in some house in the district all the strawboys assemble and have a gay time drinking the porter.(continues on next page)
