An Old Song
“The first Catholic Walk ever held in Co. Cavan was held on July 21st 1837”
The first Catholic Walk ever held in Co. Cavan was held on July 21st 1837. They assembled on a flat green field outside Lavey about four miles from Kilnaleck, and walked down to Cavan to a big Repeal gathering held in the town. Bands played and Catholic hymns and famous songs were sung to honour Cavan's great day. Songs were afterwards made about it. The following one was made after it was held by one of the men who marched and these are the words he used to form the song called the :-
Lavey Green Walk
Lost in silence are the bards of this poetic nationAre you none blamed by charms great, or what's your determinationAs a rural Swain for to explain our Catholic walk to Cavan.
(I)It been on July the 21st, in the year of '37th/"When thirty thousand Shamrock Boys around Lavey strand assembledIn uniform of white and green, so neatly decoratedFor to express and seek redress, old Erin's sons reinstated,The maidens gay all lined the way, in silence and admiration(continues on next page)- Collector
