- There was a hedge school in Curraghmore. This townland is about three miles outside Virginia. The house in which the pupils were taught is now owned by Charles Reilly. He is now living in America. The masters name was James Coleman. he was a native of Cavan town.
He taught indoors in Winter and outdoor in the Summer months. He lodged with a man named James Rock who lived in the bordering townland. He had not many pupils. The charge was one shilling a week. He taught English and Irish. The pupils used a slate to write on. The pencils were also made of slate.
Each pupils brought a sod of turf to school every day. This sod served as a seat during class(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
