- Long ago when the Englishmen were in our Country there lived an Irishman who owned a horse of which he took good care. One day when he was feeding him, he had ten pounds in his hand and he dropped it into the oats. He missed the ten pounds and he knew the horse had eaten it. He put a bridle on the horse and brought him out on the road. He had a rod and he struck him with it and as soon as he hit him there dropped a half-crown on the road.After a little time he met an Englishman who asked him what he was doing with the horse."He has eaten my money" said the Irishman "and every time I strike him he drops a halfcrown.""Will you sell him" asked the English-man."I will" said the Irishman.(continues on next page)
