- At the present time tailors visit some houses and make clothes for the inmates but this was carried to a greater extent long ago.In olden times men wore knee breeches with long stockings and six silver buttons on the legs of the breeches. Swallow tailed coats, white shirts with stiff turned down collars big tall hats and low shoes completed their outfit.The women wore white flannel petticoats under blue ones. Over these they wore long dresses down to the ground of about four lengths of material with short bodies.While in their own homes they pinned them up in front with a big tail at the back.The material for the dresses was at least 12s. per yard. Over the dress the wore a stiff heavy cloak reaching the ground and over this(continues on next page)
