    Twas on a sultry summer's day...

    'Twas on a sultry summer's day
    When tired from worken at the hay
    I lay and watched a regiment march by to foreign war
    I don't know how it came about
    I must have slept beyond a doubt
    I thought I took the shillin's in the town of Mullingar.

    Scarce had I drawn my belt to place
    When all my dark and dire disgrace
    Burst on me with a bitterness that left my mouth ajar
    For who would think a dacent boy
    A son of honest Mike Molloy
    Would join his countries enemies
    Forsaken Mullingar.

    Then cried I Sargent Gra Machree
    Will you swap back again with me
    My own old coat and breeches, they were warmer by gas
    And sure with shame my heart would break
    If all the neighbours I'd forsake
    And wear a highland petticoat
    Disgracing Mullingar.

    Then spoke the sargent sharp to me,
    You may as well contented be
