- (continued from previous page)fastened at the head of the stall to which the strap which is tied around the horse's neck is connected. The horse is tied in the stable by this strap. It is put around his neck. The food which the horse gets in Summer is grass, and in Winter he eats hay, turnips, mangolds and oats, and sometimes boiled turnips and bran. This is put in the manger for him to eat. There is a horse - shoe hung on the door of the stable to bring luck on the stock. The horse is taken to the forge once a month. The black - smith pares the hoof, and takes off the shoe. If this shoe is not worn too much he remakes it, but if it is worn he makes a new shoe. He neddens the iron in the fire and he cools it in a tub of water. When this is done he can bend the iron to any shape he pleases. He puts it on the horse's hoof with five nails. He does the same with the other shoes. The hair is clipped off the horse with a machine in the month of December.
