    Old Customs
In this parish long ago it was the custom of the people to go to the nearest well on the first of May and to skim the well. It was believed that the person who reached the well first and was the first to skim it would have a very plentiful supply of butter during the coming year. It was also believed that the person who skimmed the well had the power of lessening the supply of butter on her neighbour.
This custom was called "The taking away of the Butter".
