In some parts of the country half doors are common even to the present day but they were even more common in former times. Turf and sod and bog oak which the farmers sometimes found when digging turf was the principal firing used by the people.
Resin candles, and tin lamps which were sometimes called sconces, and in which when the wick shortened it had to be pulled up by a pin or needle, were the chief methods for giving light.- Collector
