- On one occasion when a man was congratulating Joe Boyle on his marriage, he said he condoled with him. Mr Boyle took it that the man meant that he had a bad wife and he was very angry, for it was his wedding day.
The man said he did not mean this.
It was customary in some districts for straw boys to go to the homes of the newly wed couple, get a good drink and dance with the bride one by one, and then sing, a very nice custom indeed and one which does not exist now. It was also a very common custom to set the wedding party bride's maid and groom's man to race on horses, from the chapel to the home of the groom, and the person who reached it first got a reward of drink or such prize.
It is held that there are certain days of the week, and certain months of the year unlucky for marriage.
There is a little rhyme about wedding days: -
Monday for wealth
Tuesday for health
Wednesday the best day of all
Thursday for horses
Friday for crosses
And Saturday, no luck at all.
It is also said that August is an unlucky month & that the 13th of each month is unlucky(continues on next page)
