    In Shrove, that period of time from Little Christmas day to Ash Wednesday, most marriages took place in Ireland. Parents during this time made matches for their marriageable sons and daughters. There is usually a lucky old man in every district that is sent with the word of the match.
    Long ago he used to drink much whiskey before he would start on his journey and he would always carry a black thorn stick with him as a token of luck. Sometimes an old boot was thrown after him for luck also.
    If the people were pleased they would appoint a day to meet in the nearest town. It is usually in a public house they meet and they discuss the girls fortune and if everything goes on wel when they are departing they appoint a day as is said locally "to walk the land" which means
