    floor.It was again tied into sheaves .It was then "scutched".The scutching board was like a "scythe-board"with a blunt edge on one side of it. The strand of flax was held in position with one hand on a bench with the ends hanging down and "scutched" with a "scutching board"until the loose coarse hulls fell off.This was done in an out-house .It was then cloved with a wooden clooving tongs to take the remainder of the hulls out of it.It was next "hackled".The "hackle"was a thick oak board about 2 ft long and 1 ft wide .it had 3 or 4 dozen pins or nails about 5 ins long stuck in it. The flax was drawn through those.nails to remove the coarse part of any remaining hulls.Sometimes when finer materials were to be made there was a finer "hackle" used.As each" strick"of flax was finished "hackling"it was folded neatly .it was then spun with a linen wheel,2 or 3 lbs of flax to a hank of thread/The thread was wound on a hand reel and tied up on "hanks".The hanks were then boiled and spread out to dry and bleach.it was sprinkled
