One time when the Danes defeated the Irish, Brian Boru fled and it is said that himself and a few others of his followers found shelter in this wood.
These woods are not as large as they were even ten years ago. During this time a large quantity of timber has been cut down and taken away. Timber was cut and taken to roof the Kings Palace at Aileagh near Derry, many many years ago.
For the past twelve months or so the woods are being replanted, and in time to come the woods might be as large as ever they were. This old wood is a land-mark on the side of the Clare Hills, because the Travellers going from Limerick to Ennis, by road , by rail or by river cannot fail to see them.
