- About fifty years ago when the Gaelic Athletic Association was formed, Newmarket-on-Fergus were known far and wide as great footballers. They had beaten many famous teams in the South of Ireland. There was also a team in the County Dublin who had beaten many famous teams in the North, so they challenged Newmarket-on-Fergus for the final.
Newmarket were satisfied to play them because they thought they would not give them a kick.
Newmarket went up to Dublin certain of winning. They took the field in their bare feet, but the "cross-country jumpers" as Newmarket called their opponents, took the field in shoes with(continues on next page)- Collector
