- There was once a ship going from Ireland to America. A mermaid followed the ship. She casted her eye on a young man. He was a widows son. The mermaid said she would sink the ship if she did not get a person out of it. The captain cast lots. The cast fell on the widows son three times. The captain told the widows son to got out of the ship. He said “waters wait until I sing a song”.
He was so good a singer that the mermaid fell alseep out in the water. The captain set steam to the ship. When they came to dry land the widows son was put out first for fear the mermaid would follow them again.- Collector
