    Hunter Gowan bragged that he would round up all the rebel scouts with his hunters but when he heard the first shot fired he galloped back as hard as he could to Carnew. The rebels gathered every gate & ladder in the town & put the cars standing on their heels & the gates on each side so that the soldiers could not get into the fields. One soldier jumped his horse across one of the cars. It was a dray & was lower than the others with the big heels. The horse was crippled & came to Rasheenmore & Andrew Kelly a son of Kelly that worked at Keefes got it & drew stones with it for years after
