  1. The Culm Wheel (or Collum) is a peculiar feature of the landscape in Co Carlow & I suppose in there counties near the colleries where a plentiful supply of culm or slack is procurable at minimum cost.

    Roller is worked sunwise.
    A huge cylindrical roller of granite or limestone according to geological nature of strata mounted on a horizontal axle AB, B being fixed. Donkey is yoked to the end of A & roller travels on specially prepared path. The culm is fed with shovels & kept well wetted in process of grinding. Hence the wheels were erected by the side of the rivers (i.e. the one at Ballinacarrig Bridge, beside the Burren). They are common property - no fees, no charges- simply a matter of wait for your turn. The Terryland culm wheel was strange to say built on top of a hill with no water very convenient. I remember the night well that some blackguards dismantled the wheel & allowed it to roll down the hill at a terrific speed. The finely
