    fight went on until the opposing party was driven out of the town. When the combat was over the captains of the different sides would arrange to fight again on some other date. Sticks were sold at certain shops in the town for these faction fights. The people from this side of the parish generally fought the people from Mayo Abbey.
    Match making was carried on at fairs in those days. A man from this part of the parish sold a cow to a farmer at Claremorris fair. When the sale was complete he asked the man if he knew where there was a good girl as he was thinking of getting his son married. The farmer said, I have a daughter of my own, the best housekeeper in Mayo and she has a big fortune too. So they talked on for another hour and at the finish they made a second bargain.
