    This is how Browne of the Peale became Lord Kilmaine. The landlord of Kilmaine was playing cards with a Dublin lady there. The lady won thousands of pounds and the landlord had nearly all his land lost on the cards when his friend Browne came in and seeing how matters were asked leave of him to try his luck and play a hand for him and so he did. First thing Browne did was to turn the mirror opposite the 'cáilín' and the reason why she was winning was she could read the others cards on the mirror behind him. Then he played and soon or won back all the landlords property then the landlord said "the land is yours now so long as you won it" but Browne would not take it, all he asked was an
