- Most of the dwelling houses here in olden times were thatched with rushes. Slates were used only on those of rich people. Nearly all houses had a bed in the kitchen. There were no bedsteads; beds were made on the floor, of straw and bags. In some houses the fireplace was built in the side-wall some there was no fireplace at all; the fire was lighted in the middle of the floor, and there was a hole in the roof over it to let out the smoke. Some chimneys were made of sods, mortar and wattles. Floors were made of mortar and without any cement. For light, the people had a bog dale stick lighted in a hole in the wall. Beasts were kept inside.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
