Small particles of butter can be seen floating on top of the churn, and hot water added to keep up the temperature of the cream.
In olden times it was a general custom for people to take butter off another person's churn.
This is the way it was done.
The person, who wishes to take butter from another woman's churn, must go to a spring well on a May morning before the sun gets up and get a can of water.
