- In olden times the bread the people ate was nearly always made of oatmeal. Very often they ground their own corn on a grindstone, but in later years when mills came into use the Miller ground all the corn they required. The grinding stones consisted of two large round stones. There was a hole in each of the stones with an iron bar going through.
