- (continued from previous page)Long ago when a man wanted to get married, he asked his friend to go to his neighbors house in which a girl was eligible for marriage. The mother of the boy told the man that she would not allow her son to marry the girl if she could not make a nice fire on the hearth.
Usually the first thing the girl did when the man entered was to put a nice fire on the hearth as she knew his errand by the fact that he carried a stick as a silent signal. If the messenger got a reply in the affirmative he returned to the home of the boy's parents and it was arranged that the parents of both parties would meet in some licensed premises in their market town.
