  1. In former times people did not wear any boots at all. After some years men started to wear them. No boy wore boots until he was grown up and going away to some other country. No girl wore them until she was getting married.
    There are accounts of many people who never wore boots. Máire Mhártain was an old woman who lived in my village. She never wore boots. She always went round barefoot. “Troightíns” were worn by the wemon in my village long ago. They are still worn. Mrs. Ruane wears them. One pair of shoes did the father and the son when going on any special place. One pair of shoes did the mother and her daughters, when going to mass or some other place. When a woman went to town she carried her shoes with her until she reached the town. Then she put them on.
    Children go barefoot to school in summer only. There are two
