Ar an leathanach seo
- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)not invited to the wedding but who came dressed in disguise. They all wore straw hats and covered themselves with straw as best they could so that they would not be known. They were very well conducted, one man acting as captain. They sang and danced and amused both themselves and their listeners as best they how and went quietly home. When morning came all those who attended the wedding went home and the man and his wife were left to share their happiness alone.
All the old marriages were not conducted in this way. Sometimes the young people made their own acquaintances without the sanctions of their parents. When this was so the man came within a short distance of the girls home where he was met by the girl and they made away quietly and got married secretly. This was called a "runaway match".
