- About a hundred years ago there were no stone houses. They were stones built of sods, and they were called mud-wall cabins. They were thatched with straws or rushes. In each of these houses there was a a half door, and an "out shot" for the bed in the kitchen. In these houses also they had the cows, and pigs, and fowl, at the end of the house.
They had no lamps, and the light they had was bog deal splinters, and they got rushes and dried them and greased them. Then they burned them, and after many years, there were tallow candles manufactured by Messrs Ceon and company, Bridge Street, Ballina. In these houses also the windows were very small, becuase they were afraid the Robbers would come and take all the money they had.- Bailitheoir
