- Wheaten bread and oaten meal bread were eaten long ago, but their principal food was potatoes. These they ate three times daily.
Oaten-meal cake was a dainty, eaten at Christmas or at any other big festival. This bread was made on a board the meal was mixed with water but very often with buttermilk. It was placed on a pan beside the fire. It was baked shortly.
