  1. The houses we have now are not like those of ancient times. The latter were thatched, the floors were made of flags. The window was a hole in the side wall, net-wire was placed on the hole to keep out the hens.
    The fire was sometimes in the middle of the floor. A hole in the roof served for the purpose of chimney. The door was very low. These houses were lighted at night by a candle made from rushes soaked in tallow.
